Series 1: Personal Growth

Continuous Learning

by Phil Latz

Welcome to the third blog in my personal growth series that I hope will help you become more successful in your business.

As a business owner myself for many years, I understand the challenges that you face.

Today I’ll be sharing with you about continuous learning.

Back in the olden days, in other words, when I was a kid, you went to school, in many cases finishing at the end of the 10th grade, then got a job, that was often expected to last you until you retired.

How rapidly the world has changed!

Most people now don’t just have multiple job changes, but multiple career changes, in their lifetime. Some jobs that many people will be doing in a decade’s time don’t even exist today.

As for business, virtually every business has experienced radical changes to the products that they sell and the way they operate and interact with their customers.

To be successful in business, you need to abandon any concept that you go to school, graduate with a nice diploma to frame and that your learning days are over.

The more you learn, the more you earn!

In this blog, I’m going to look at how to find the time to learn, how to learn and where to find sources of learning. I’ll also discuss who to learn from and what to learn.

Let’s start with time.

You might be thinking, I’m too busy to learn! I’m so busy running my business that I don’t have time for anything else.

In his best-selling book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, author Steven Covey wrote that the seventh habit, that surrounds and empowers the other six, is to sharpen the saw. That means taking time out to think and learn, as well as exercise and renew.

The relatively small amount of time that you invest in learning will make you more effective for the entire remainder of your working life.

If you make it a priority, you will make time to learn. As I’ll demonstrate in a future video, you need to put the big rocks into your finite bucket of time first.

We all waste a lot of time. If you watch TV, then you have time to learn.

If you have a commute to work or travel between jobs, then you have time to listen to a podcast or audiobook.

Now I’d like to share with you about mentors.

One of the best ways to learn is to find someone, often older than yourself, who has already achieved what you’re aiming to do. Perhaps not in the exact same field, but possibly a related industry.

You’ll be amazed how generous people will be with their time and knowledge if they find someone who is genuinely interested in learning and who respects their experience.

For years I used to keep in touch with the owner of a larger, but otherwise similar independent media company to our own.

I’d travel interstate to meet this man, sometimes over lunch, or at other times over the phone. We’d compare notes about a whole range of key issues, challenges and changing trends in our industry.

We both found this to be a valuable relationship, but I suspect I got the most out of it!

Ok, let’s assume that I’ve successfully convinced you that you need to keep learning. How should you go about it?

For starters, don’t just listen or read passively. You need to take notes! Whether on paper or electronic device. Even if you never refer to these notes again, the process of taking them makes you listen more deeply.

If you’re in a class or at any sort of seminar or other events, be one of those people who sit up the front and asks questions.

Break things down into bite-sized chunks. Many business books and teachings are too information-dense to read in one sitting. Just like this video series, it’s more effective if you don’t watch more than a couple in any one sitting.

Different people learn differently, you might be a visual person, an audio person, or a written word person. Just go with what works best for you.

Learn beyond your particular specialty. For example, biographies can be inspiring and you can learn from the life experiences of others.

Today there are so many sources of information and learning options.

Of course, there’s still traditional formal training such as an MBA from a university or another formal course.

But these days there are so many more ways to learn. You have options ranging from YouTube videos to podcasts, books, audiobooks, webinars, conferences and seminars, trade shows, business coaching and more.

Don’t be afraid to invest money in your education. Surveys have shown that it’s one of the most cost-effective investments that you can make.

But do your research before you hand over your hard-earned money.

For example, for many years I’ve been investing in property and doing renovations and upgrades to these properties.

There are so many property ‘gurus’ out there offering ‘must-do’ property courses that usually run into the thousands of dollars.

I went to the free seminars for just about all of them, before selecting the one I thought was best for me. Then I invested a significant amount of money, not to mention many hours of my time over a couple of solid years of after-hours training.

I’m confident that it was a wise investment.

It has already paid for itself off many times over, and will continue to do so many more times, provided I don’t drop dead any time soon and that I keep investing.

I hope that you can now understand why it’s important to have a mindset of curiosity and continuous learning. If you look at successful business people, you’ll find these to be common traits.

In the next blog in this series, I’m going to reveal some key differences that separate successful business owners from unsuccessful ones.

I believe that with passion, consistent effort and wise advice you can succeed in your business.

I wish you all the best and I’ll see you next time.

Personal Growth | Goal Setting

What is goal setting?

Business Coaching Video: Goal Setting

Life is short and it’s precious.

I’ve seen so many people passively drift along through life. Like they’re riding on a log that’s floating down a stream, being buffeted by the rocks, dunked by the rapids, getting stagnant in a backwater.

But if you set goals then your log turns into a kayak. You’re still in the same stream but you’re no longer at its mercy.

You can set your own course. You have something to paddle for and to steer towards.

In this video I’ll share four steps to help you set SMART goals.

Remember a goal, not written down, is just a dream.

Goal Setting

SMART goals, gears concept
by Phil Latz

Welcome to the second blog in my personal growth series that I hope will help you to become more successful in your business. As a business owner myself for many years, I understand the challenges that you face.

Today I’ll be sharing with you about goal setting.

If you’ve done any business or personal development training in the past, I’m sure it hasn’t been too long before the discussion has turned to goal setting.

That’s because it’s a universal truth.

So how do you set goals? Here are four steps.

First, you need to deliberately set aside some uninterrupted time and space to think clearly. This might be early one morning, on a weekend or even during your annual holidays. And make sure you turn off every electronic device!

Second, you have to write down the thoughts that come to you during this goal-setting time that you’ve set aside.

A goal, not written down, is just a dream.

Don’t worry what you write to start with, just get your thoughts recorded.

Thirdly you need to refine your thoughts into clear goals.

Goals need to be SMART. That stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timed.

I’ll explain each of these five attributes in a little more detail.

Specific – can your goals be easily understood by others?

Measurable – what gets measured gets improved. Your goals need to be simple to measure. These measurements are sometimes called KPI’s – Key Performance Indicators.

Achievable – you can have realistic goals and stretch goals, but don’t set goals so high that that will demoralise you.

You can still have BHAG’s as author Jim Collins calls them, Big Hairy Audacious Goals, but you need to break big goals down into steps.

For example, if you want to become a world champion in any sport, your first goal might be to become a club champion, then state champion, then national champion and finally a world champion.

Relevant – for the purpose of this series, I’m mainly talking about business goals, but life goals are just as important, if not more so.

Time – be specific, when will you want to achieve your goal? Nothing focuses your attention and builds momentum more than a deadline. A classic example was Apollo moon landing in 1969. Almost a decade earlier President Kennedy said that they were going to put a man on the moon and bring him safely home again before the end of the decade. The efforts of many thousands of workers were then geared towards that deadline.

But coming back down to earth, literally, here’s a smaller scale example.

Example:

Not just ‘I want to create a great YouTube Channel’

But, ‘I want to create a YouTube Channel that is helping over 10,000 business people each month by January 2022.’

You can break this down into stepping stones, milestones, progress goals, whatever you’d like to call them.

Fourth and finally, you need to make yourself and the goals that you’ve set accountable to a very small, and carefully selected group of people. These need to be positive people who will build you up and encourage you to achieve your goals, not tear you down.

It might be that you hire a business coach like me to help you. Or you might become part of a small business group.

Whatever structure you choose, you need a safe, confidential environment in which you can drop all of the defensive walls, bravado and ego that often come with business ownership. You need to face the unvarnished facts, share your goals and make yourself accountable.

I’ve been doing this myself for years as part of a very small group of like-minded business owners. It’s an invaluable experience.

I hope that you can now understand why it’s important for you to set goals. More than just understanding, I urge you to think about and write down your goals. Why not start right now!

In the next blog, I’m going to discuss continuous learning, how to learn, what you need to learn and why.

I believe that with passion, consistent effort and wise advice you can succeed in your business.

I wish you all the best and I’ll see you next time.

Introduction to Personal Growth Series

by Phil Latz

Welcome to the first of my Personal Growth blog series that I hope will help you to become more successful in your business.

As a business owner myself for many years, I understand the challenges that you face.

In total, I’ve already planned the titles and topics for about 100 blogs divided into 14 series – with each series containing from six to 12 blogs.

Of course, there’s no rule forcing you to read the blogs in order, which leads me to my first point.

You might be tempted to jump straight into Series Two: Maximising Your Profit.

‘Why do I have to waste my time with all that fluffy Personal Growth stuff first?’ you might think.

But if you read my series and get to know me more, you’ll realise that I’m quite a systematic and thoughtful person, so it’s no accident that I’ve put personal growth first.

I’m going to explain why with a story followed by examples of three world-leading business and leadership authors.

You’ve probably heard yourself that lottery winners often go broke.

One study done in the USA found that lottery winners are more likely to declare bankruptcy within three-to-five years than the average American who’s never won any significant prize.

Nearly one-third of lottery winners eventually declare bankruptcy.

Why?

The answers relate to the lottery winner’s self-worth and self-perception. If their reality does not align with this they will often squander their winnings, whether deliberately or not fully understanding what they’re doing, until the money is gone and they’re back to a life that fits their self-image.

These people are either not listening to wise advice or don’t have many people in their circle of influence who are capable of giving wise advice.

Now to the three authors.

I come from a very bookish family and was encouraged to read and learn from a young age.

The three biggest categories of books on my shelves are business books, biographies of leaders and cycling books including a shelf full that we published through our own cycling media business.

I’m going to conclude this video by highlighting three business books, all of which are long time best sellers that I’d highly recommend.

Rich Dad Poor Dad, Robert Kyosaki

Key message: It all starts with mindset.

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey

Key message: Personal victory comes before the public victory.

The Winning Attitude, John Maxwell.

Key message: Your attitude determines your altitude.

Hopefully, now you can understand why I was compelled to start with the personal growth series first, before moving on to what most people would consider the ‘real content’.

In the next blog, I’m going to discuss goal setting – why it’s important and how to set goals most effectively.

I believe that with passion, consistent effort and wise advice you can succeed in your business.

I wish you all the best and I’ll see you next time.
